Market access policy

Since its launch in 1996, the EU’s Market Access Strategy has become
one of the pillars of European trade policy. It has been designed to achieve
the following key objectives :

  • Serve EU exporters through practical operational measures
  • Keep a comprehensive and interactive public record in order to scrutinise
    obstacles to trade in goods and services
  • Eliminate trade barriers and ensure that our partners comply with their international commitments

For these purposes, the interactive Market Access Database (please see the brochure for detailed information)
has been set up as its main operational tool. With its different sections, it

  • Provides basic information to businesses on market conditions in key third country markets ;
  • Makes possible systematic follow up of complaints received from businesses concerning
    barriers to trade in non-EU countries ;
  • Facilitates the monitoring of our trading partners’ compliance with their international commitments ;
  • Contributes to the identification of trade policy priorities.

Through a continuous three-way exchange of information between the EUinstitutions, Member States
and European business, the EU pursues a pro-active dialogue with all its major trading partners
in the appropriate bilateral and multilateral fora in order to reduce the many obstacles facing European
exporters of goods and services.

When trade barriers are brought to the attention of the Commission, their elimination may be
pursued through the most appropriate means including, inter alia :
